McKinsey Solve practice test plan: the 7-day schedule that fits the current format
In this guide
Practice the format you'll actually face
McKinsey Solve is the gamified screening assessment McKinsey sends after your application. As of 2026, candidate reports on r/McKinseyAndCompany and coach confirmations on PrepLounge describe two invitation lengths: a 65-minute version with Redrock Study (about 35 minutes) and Sea Wolf (about 30 minutes), and an 85-minute version that adds Sustainable Futures Lab (about 20 minutes) as a third game. The Ecosystem Creation game that dominates older guides has been phased out since mid-2025; unless your invitation explicitly mentions a longer session, practising Ecosystem is wasted prep time.
That changes what a good practice test looks like. It has to compress the same decisions the real games compress: reading exhibits and running quick calculations under a clock (Redrock), classifying and selecting under constraints (Sea Wolf), and, on 85-minute invites, making judgement calls in an evolving team scenario (Sustainable Futures Lab). Passive reading is not practice. Timed runs are.
How many practice runs you need
Less than the internet claims. A coach on PrepLounge put it directly in 2025: you do not need 15 to 25 full-length mock tests, because McKinsey is measuring how you approach problems under time pressure, not whether you have memorised game patterns. What actually moves your score is the number of reviewed runs, not the raw count. Coaches on PrepLounge recommend at least one or two Sea Wolf simulations specifically so the pacing shock does not hit you on test day.
The plan below uses six timed runs. Each one targets a specific failure mode, and each one ends with the same 10-minute error review. If you only have 48 hours, the compressed version is one Redrock run on day one and one Sea Wolf run on day two, both with reviews.
The 7-day schedule
| Day | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline Redrock | Run one timed Redrock-style case (35 minutes). Note per-question times. Review every miss and classify the error type. |
| 2 | Math drills | 30 minutes on percentages, weighted averages, ratios, and chart reading. Redrock math stays basic; speed and accuracy on the basics is what wins. |
| 3 | Baseline Sea Wolf | Run one timed Sea Wolf simulation (30 minutes). Record how long Profiling, Categorising, Prospecting, and Final Selection each took. |
| 4 | Sea Wolf pacing | Second Sea Wolf run with tighter phase budgets: front-load speed in Categorising, save accuracy for the final selection. Compare phase times against day 3. |
| 5 | SFL day (85-min invites only) | Read the Sustainable Futures Lab guide and run one 20-minute judgement drill. 65-minute invites: redo your weakest Redrock question type instead. |
| 6 | Dress rehearsal | Full timed run: Redrock plus Sea Wolf back to back (add SFL on 85-minute invites). No pauses, realistic conditions. |
| 7 | Light review | Re-read your error log from all five runs. Warm up with 10 minutes of percentage questions. Sleep beats cramming. |
The post-run error review (where the score jumps)
Ten minutes after every run, sort every miss into one of five buckets. Candidate reports on Reddit and PrepLounge list exactly these, because they are the mistakes the assessment is actually built to catch:
- Misread the question. You answered a different question than the one asked.
- Miscopied a number. The exhibit said 4,200 and your working used 2,400.
- Wrong denominator. The percentage base was the wrong one.
- Unit mismatch. Millions against thousands, minutes against hours.
- Rushed the sanity check. The answer was implausible and you submitted anyway.
Whatever bucket dominates your log becomes the focus of the next day's drill. Two reviewed runs with a dominant error pattern beaten are worth more than five unreviewed runs.
The dress rehearsal
Day 6 exists because Solve is a stamina and attention problem, not a knowledge problem. Sitting Redrock and Sea Wolf back to back with no pause reproduces the real conditions: roughly 65 minutes of screen work, exhibit switching, and decisions made slightly tired. Candidates who took the real assessment in late 2025 and posted on r/McKinseyAndCompany describe the actual test as similar to good simulations, with the difference that site 3 of Sea Wolf was capped at 80% for them. Learn what a capped site looks like in practice so it does not rattle you: when no microbe combination reaches 100%, take the best defensible trio and move on.
What score to aim for
McKinsey does not publish a pass mark. When you ask your recruiter, you get an overall score and a decile ranking. Threads on r/McKinseyAndCompany through 2025 and 2026 report scores from 487 to 550 with deciles from 2 to 10: one candidate with 516 and decile 7 got no invite, another with second-decile made it to a New York final round, and a 550 (10th decile) candidate still waited weeks for an invite. The pattern is consistent with what coaches say: decile 8-plus is a strong signal, but the score is one input alongside your CV, experience, and referrals. Aim high, then get back to interview prep.
Results timing varies. Candidates report hearing back in a few days to three weeks, and the score is only disclosed if you ask your recruiter directly; it does not arrive automatically.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I prepare for McKinsey Solve?
Five to seven days at one or two hours a day is the range most passing candidates on r/consultingcareers and PrepLounge describe. Coaches on PrepLounge explicitly advise against 15 to 25 full mock tests. Solve rewards structured execution under time pressure, which a handful of reviewed runs builds better than a grind of unreviewed ones.
Do I need to practice the Ecosystem game in 2026?
No. Ecosystem Creation was phased out around mid-2025, confirmed by candidate reports and by coaches on PrepLounge through 2026. The standard pairing is Redrock plus Sea Wolf, with Sustainable Futures Lab appearing on 85-minute invitations. Only dust off Ecosystem material if your invitation mentions a much longer session.
How many practice tests should I take before McKinsey Solve?
Four to six timed runs with reviews: two Redrock cases, two or three Sea Wolf runs, one full dress rehearsal, and a judgement drill if your invite is 85 minutes. Every run ends with the five-bucket error review above. That beats a dozen unreviewed attempts.
What score should I aim for on McKinsey Solve?
Candidates report an overall score (487 to 550 in recent threads) and a decile from 1 to 10. Invites have gone out at decile 7 and been withheld at decile 9, so treat 8-plus as the working target and weigh it against the rest of your application, which is exactly what McKinsey does.
